Residents of Kitengela and Noonkopir estate residents yesterday demolished a controversial Sh 9 Million road bridge citing poor workmanship by the contractor.
The action by the residents who faulted the works claiming it was shoddy. The bridge on the 3.4 kilometre Kitengela – Noonkopir feeder road had caved in only two days after completion infuriating the area residents.
The residents who took the law into their own hands and demolished the bridge accusing the relevant bodies of ignoring their pleas.
The contractor was accused of using substandard building materials and covering the bridge with cotton soil after applying a thin layer of concrete on the metal bars. ‘’for several years we have been pleading with the devolved unit to construct the bridge after as we suffered especially during the rainy season’’. Let the contractor know we will not accept shoddy work, said Mr John Simiyu,a Nookopir resident.
They vowed not to allow the construction to continue calling on DCI to probe the contractor. Kitengela MCA Francis Kaesha had a hard time trying to calm the crowd.” I raised the alarm over the contractor when the project was launched but I was dismissed by the contractor. This is classical theft of public resources.’’ This must stop, said Mr Kaesha.
