Mikel Arteta pitted his wits against the new Premier League champions Liverpool to make away with 3 points at the Emirates.
His selection for the starting team received positive reaction after bringing in Rob Holding, Cedric Soares, Lucas Torreira, Reiss Nelson and Bukayo Saka who made an excellent night for the Gunners. Aubameyang, Willock and Ceballos replaced Lacazette, Nelson and Torreira.
It was the only two shots for the all night that made Alex Lacazette and Reiss Nelson get the net dancing when they took advantage of some carelessness of Liverpool defenders. In spite of Sadio Mane scoring first in the 20th minute, Arsenal came from behind to secure a very unlikely 2-1 win against the champions with Lacazette scoring their opener 12 minutes later and Nelson getting his goal a minute before half-time.
This is how it happened; the Reds, playing in black moved around confidently after their only goal until Nelson’s pressure made Van Dijk to scuff a pass to Gomez that Lacazette cut out and the Frenchman rounded Alisson to tuck home Gunners first goal.
A minute before the break, Liverpool’s gate keeper attempted a first time pass back towards Robinson only for Lacazette to steal the ball and pick out Nelson who calmly placed his first Premier League goal giving Arsenal a 2-1 win against the Reds.
By the end of the game, Liverpool had over 20 attempts to Arsenals two.
Jurgen Klopp’s men dominated the possession from the off with up to 67% but to Arsenal who went into the game with a bitter defeat by their rivals Tottenham on Sunday and with Europa League qualification via the league now looking like an uphill struggle, they needed the points.
However, Liverpool have not been at their best since claiming the title but it seemed Arteta’s side had prepared for it in perfect fashion ending Liverpool’s dreams of joining Manchester City as centurions.
